Revenge Review: Retaliation (Season 4 Episode 16)
It seems like Revenge has taken an odd turn lately.
In “Retaliation,” it looks like we’re going to find out some juicy back-story about Emily’s new beau. It even looks like he might be conspiring with Margeaux, but it turns out he’s actually working with Emily and Nolan. We get to see a road trip when Emily rides along with him to warn his ex-wife of danger, but it’s all very mediocre. I simply don’t buy these two being together.
In fact, that whole story wraps up a little too quickly, and Ben’s deep dark secret isn’t so interesting.
I just keep waiting to understand the purpose of these new characters when it feels like the show already had what could have been a pretty good series finale.
I do love the relationship between Nolan and Louise, and now that Louise has accidentally killed her brother, I expect things the pace to pick up a little. It’s too bad, though, that Louise doesn’t just tell Nolan the truth about what happened to him. If anyone could help with something like a dead body, it’s Nolan and Emily. And it seems like she really ought to know that by now.
My heart is broken for Jack. I’ve kind of had the feeling he was going to die this season, but what’s happening to him now is probably more shocking. Margeaux has an evil streak, and she’s hit Emily in her “weak spot” by hurting Jack.
And just before we see what happens there, we see Ben asking Emily who her first love — her weak spot — is, figuring that whoever that is is the person Margaux will go after next.
Emily says “Jack,” and it feels like she’s responding to the question. Ben acts surprised (which seems insane), but Emily points out that she sees Jack up ahead. He’s being arrested, and his child is being ripped away from him.
It is an incredibly painful scene to watch, maybe more so if you have children of your own. We already see a similar scene earlier in the episode with Carl crying as Jack heads off to work, and now Jack is being separated from his son again. The kid screaming and crying just rips your heart from your chest.
Evil, evil Margaux. Jack just wanted to take his son to see the fireworks.
I will say this: I’m really excited to see a face-off between Emily and Margaux. Margaux has essentially replaced Victoria, which even Victoria points out when she says Margaux has become a lot like her when it comes to going after a target.
