Revenge Review: Clarity (Season 4 Episode 18)

Revenge, Reviews

She did it, you guys.

On Revenge, “Clarity,” Emily Thorne spills the beans and tells the world that she is, actually, Amanda Clarke. And she does so with  smiling Jack Porter by her side, while the rest of her loved ones (and her enemies) watch it happen on their television screens.

Beforehand, it seems like almost everyone is developing a conscience. Margaux calls off an evil plan that involves Courtney Love, and I have to admit, I don’t know if I buy it. Just last week in “Loss,” Margaux lies and says Emily pushed her into the street. Now, suddenly, she doesn’t want to hurt anyone any more.

Margaux: “I have nothing left to lose but my soul, and I’m not willing to give that up just yet.”

Meanwhile, Emily is also scrambling to do the right thing, even though that’s a heck of a lot more complicated than it should be. She wants to clear Daniel’s name, but at what expense? More scheming and more lies — will this ever end? (And let’s not forget about the time that Daniel shot Emily.)

Emily tries to convince Jack to change his story, putting him in terrible position as usual. Only this time, Mama Stevie is around and she’s having none of that.

I really like the addition of Jack’s mom, but in some ways it feels a little too convenient. Still, her advice is worth listening to.

Stevie: “You come from two alcoholic parents. Make sure Emily’s not your class of scotch.”

He listens, sort of. He tells Emily he won’t change his story and risk losing his child. Instead, they come up with a new plan that involves a sacrifice on Emily’s part, and Jack looks completely in love as he watches it happen. That smile? Priceless.

Emily announces to the world that she’s actually Amanda Clarke.

This is especially significant since she told her father earlier in the season that she didn’t want to be Amanda — that Emily Thorne was who she is now, and that she didn’t want to go back. It’s also significant because Amanda symbolizes something entirely different than Emily does, as Nolan so candidly points out.

Nolan: I mean this in the best possible way, but Emily Thorne was not built for good. She was built to clear her dad’s name.

The announcement is a shocking one (not to viewers, because the previews showed how the episode would end), and it’s definitely going to be interesting to see where this goes.

Speaking of shocking, Louise tells Nolan she wants a baby, which makes things even more complicated than they already were. Good for Nolan in telling her they should end the marriage, but he makes a mistake in not telling her the whole truth. Louise is about to snap, and he’s no longer on her good side.

I’m nervous. Very nervous.
