6 Shows that Deserve a Kickstarter Movie
We all know the story: Veronica Mars was tragically cancelled after just three seasons, and the FBI spinoff got quashed before it could even begin. And for seven years, fans wasted away, waiting and praying and hoping that their favorite characters would one day grace their screens again somehow.
And then something ridiculous happened.
The actors and creators got together to make a movie and asked the fans to fund it through Kickstarter. Fans ended up donating over $5 million to the cause. Woah.
Now that it’s been done, fans of cancelled shows everywhere are chomping at the bit to get their movie made. But which ones really deserve it? Here’s our list of six:
Friends
This one is obvious. We’ve had ten years to grieve, marathon, pout, and marathon again. It’s time. The hilarity, the sex, the romance — it all fit so perfectly together into a neat 30 minute package. A movie complete with teenage Emma, Jack, and Erica, along with any other tiny tots the Friends have popped out in the interim is absolutely necessary.
Gossip Girl
I know, I know, this teenage soap opera wore out its welcome, and you were probably glad to see it go. But doesn’t the Upper East Side feel a bit… empty these days? I’d argue that the show’s “Where Are They Now” montage wrapped things up just a little too nicely, and we deserve to see these kids give us one last hurrah. I’d take a movie about Jenny Humphrey and Blair Waldorf duking it out at fashion week, that’s for sure.
Stargate Universe
My inner sci-fi nerd is showing with this one, but I can’t seem to care.
After getting cancelled on possibly the cruelest cliffhanger of all time, Stargate fans are still wondering, DID THEY EVER MAKE IT TO THE NEW GALAXY? In this case, the years that have passed between the show’s last episode and the potential movie would only make things more believable since they’ve been floating in cryo-sleep for who knows how long. Who cares if almost all the actors have full-time television jobs right now? Give me my movie, dammit!
Revolution
Speaking of sci-fi… by the end of it, no one could stick Revolution into anything resembling a genre because the characters and plots were just all over the place. But even through the mess, that series had promise, and it was definitely axed a little too soon. It has all the components of a show primed and ready for a follow-up movie: passionate actors, rabid fans, and way more hanging plot lines than we know what to do with. Plus, I dare anyone to keep a straight face and tell me they didn’t want to see something happen between Charlie and Monroe.
Charmed
At this point, I don’t even need the Halliwell Sisters to make that much of an appearance in a follow-up movie. We got eight years of them, and I’m content with that. But who in the hell decided that we weren’t going to make a Charmed: The Next Generation movie? Chris, Wyatt, and all their little cousins are the product of like a thousand different kinds of magic, and I’d pay good money to see a movie about them starting a whole coven from their extended family. Bonus points if our favorite demon/ghost/stalker, Cole Turner, makes a cameo.
Gilmore Girls
This one can actually happen, guys. I’m not even joking. The Gilmore Girls cast is set to appear on a reunion panel together this summer at ATX TV Festival, and I’m putting all my hopes and dreams on the bet that they’ll announce a movie. Now that Parenthood has wrapped up, Lauren Graham has some free time, right? Who doesn’t want to see Rory and Lorelei return to us in all their gab-girl glory?
