Nashville Review: Somebody Pick Up My Pieces (Season 3 Episode 14)

This week’s episode of Nashville, “Somebody Pick up My Pieces”, was pretty much chaos. After Jeff went down in flames last week, Edgewood Records folded, leaving all our favorite artists in limbo. Spoilers below.

We start off by being reminded that Jeff slinked off to Layla’s house to lick his wounds after last week’s debacle. Turns out he’s hard to shake, since she finds him hanging out in her living room the next morning. (Unrelated question: is Nashville the cheapest place to live on earth? How do all of these struggling artists have such amazing houses?)

Jeff becomes harder to shake than I imagined when he starts trying to open his own label. Even worse, he’s dragging Layla with him. Luckily for her, Luke, who Jeff has talked into working with him, doesn’t want to sign Layla, so she meets with Rayna instead (she sits in her waiting room all day for a meeting. I think I like Layla now). I’m guessing this is going to work out way better for her. I just wish she’d ditch Jeff completely. Because no one sees Jeff for what he is (a terrible person) he also manages to talk Will into joining his/Luke’s label.

Just when I think Jeff definitely has an invite to the next boy’s night, Luke lets him know that he actually doesn’t want his help anymore. Vindication: Jeff was fired again. But then Layla asks him to be her manager. I need Layla to get over Jeff ASAP.

Speaking of people I’m tired of, for some reason Teddy still hasn’t realized that his sleeping with a prostitute isn’t nearly as shocking as he thinks it is. Instead of just accepting blame and taking his punishment (which would probably be minor) he just keeps digging himself in deeper. When he hears what happened to Jeff he panics (which is reasonable, since it’s completely his fault) and starts trying to do some damage control. Sadly for him, he’s just not smart enough to do that correctly, and he ends up making even more of a mess.

After he finally tracks Jeff down and finds out that his secrets are about to go public, he goes to the prostitute’s house. Naturally, she’s under investigation and now the investigators have the mayor on video at her house. Good one, Teddy.

I’m no politician, but I’m pretty sure a good rule of thumb for not getting caught sleeping with prostitutes is to not go to their houses. Or, you know, to not sleep with them. That would have worked too.

Meanwhile, Deacon is offered a trial medication. Great news. Except, it means he’d have to forgo a transplant if his name came up on the list. So he has a big decision to make.

To get his mind off things, he goes in to the studio with Avery to get back to what he’s good at, playing guitar. Unfortunately, he’s still got an attitude and he and Avery get into a minor fight about some guitar slide thing? I don’t know. They made up. And with a clear head Deacon turns down the trial medication. Also, Scarlett asks out Deacon’s doctor. I guess that’s technically allowed, but it seems a little odd to me.

In other ongoing drama, Sadie tells Rayna about her lawsuit, and Rayna swoops right in and takes care of it. She brings in the big gun lawyers who let them know that they should probably just settle. To the tune of half a mil. Luckily Rayna’s label has an insurance policy that can cover it. That was easy.

To top if off, when the parties meet to settle, and Rayna comes face to face with Sadie’s deadbeat ex, she takes the opportunity to tell him to back off. I’m hoping Pete doesn’t take this as an excuse to keep the fight up with Sadie. Sadie celebrates by buying everyone donuts. I don’t think she knows that in Nashville, toasting to someone finally being out of your life for good is a pretty solid way to make sure they aren’t.

Slightly more productively, Gunnar and Scarlett start to deal with their feelings (Scarlett’s about Deacon and Gunnar about his not son) in a more positive way. They even get back together with Avery to do a show. I actually kind of loved this. They both seemed much more reasonable in this episode and I’m glad they are moving away from being obsessed about one thing all the time.

Finally, something is going on in Juliette’s life. She’s got a Vogue photo shoot lined up. She’s struggling, however, with her appearance since she’s so pregnant at this point. The first attempt at the shoot does not go well. She’s uncomfortable in all of the clothes they bring, and she ends up kicking the photographer out. But then Avery offers her some unintentional inspiration when he tells her she looks beautiful with or without clothes. This gets her thinking; she should probably just do a naked shoot. And she does. This wasn’t the most exciting thing ever, but I’m glad she is finally up to something. I’m also glad that she decided to model her shoot after all of the Kardashian pregnancy shoots. Complete with a big silk sheet.

All in all, this week’s episode pulled me in a lot more than last week’s. Maybe this whole Edgewood shakeup is what the show needed to get out of a rut. I’m starting to like some of our characters again. Hopefully this trend continues next week.
