Abbott Elementary celebrates its mid-season finale with the return of Taraji P. Henson.
On Abbott Elementary Season 5 Episode 8, “Birthday,” Janine’s mother comes to town for her daughter’s 30th birthday. The big day also just so happens to fall on the school’s annual Winter Show.
Janine is eager to catch her mom up to speed, reintroducing Vanetta to her now-boyfriend, Gregory, and showing off the work her students are doing in the new after-school fashion club.
Additionally, Barbara and Janine’s mother come face to face again after that previous conversation where Barb told Vanetta to step up her game as a parent.
Let us all hope Janine’s mother took the advice to heart and has turned over a new leaf since her last visit.

What Happened on the Previous Episode?
Previously on Abbott Elementary, a new student joins Gregory’s Garden Goofballs, but the boys’ club doesn’t respond well to welcoming a girl into their ranks. Gregory teaches them a blunt lesson about misogyny and excluding others from participating in the same activities because of their gender. Meanwhile, Janine works to change Ava’s mind when she refuses to approve her plans for a new fashion club.
