Chicago P.D., Reviews

Chicago P.D. Season 13 Episode 1, “Consequences,” starts with the Intelligence Unit still dismembered. However, in true Voight nature, he does everything in his power to bring his unit back together, including blackmailing the man in charge.

While the episode is supposed to be Voight-centric, it is the perfect introduction for the newest member of the team, Imani. She seems to be the missing piece for the puzzle that is the Intelligence Unit.

The season premiere is also a great demonstration of how tight this unit is and how far they are willing to go to remain together (or get back together, for that matter).

There is a very distinct difference in how the hire-ups see Voight’s unit and how the officers do. On the one hand, Devlin refuses to sign his name to reinstate the unit because of Voight’s reputation.

He makes it clear he doesn’t want the unit back together and will continue to push for it to remain dismembered. However, it is the same Voight power that he is trying to stop that pushes him to reinstate the team. Voight’s known behavior finds a solution for his unit to come together, and both Torres and Burgess get their badges back.

On the other hand, when Imain watches the team work together, she immediately understands they are a family. While she jokingly calls them the Brady Bunch, she understands there is a deeper bond than what she’s seen in any other unit.

Imani seems to be a terrible fit for every unit. Her boss disregards her voice, making her feel like she needs to keep running until she finds a place where she truly belongs. That is when the Intelligence Unit comes in, a group of misfits that make the perfect family.

With an attitude and a track record that seem a lot like Voight’s, Imani seems like the perfect addition to the team. Hopefully, with the show’s formula of focusing on one character per episode, we will get to learn more about her (and keep her for longer than we were able to keep Kiana).

Even though “Consequences” supposedly focuses on Voight, it doesn’t feel very centric, but Chicago P.D. Season 13 Episode 2, “Open Wounds,” is definitely a Torres-centric episode.

Torres hasn’t been the same since Gloria died, and that is even more obvious on this episode. We watch him struggle with his faith, beliefs, and comfort. The man who was once so sure of his background now seems to be lost between worlds.

His character seems to be in limbo, not knowing if he should move on or carry the guilt of Gloria’s death longer. Even though it seems like a small detail, the man who is always wearing jeans and a white T-shirt is seen wearing a black T-shirt. While this may seem meaningless, it is a physical representation of the dark place he finds himself in.

He forces himself to be present at work, but his struggle follows him wherever he goes. The only time he looks to have gotten it together is when he is in the interrogation room. It is as if he finally remembers who he is and where he comes from, fighting for his very people in that room.

However, that soon disappears, and we are left with a struggling Torres again.

Even though Kevin gives Torres his support and tries to get him to talk about his feelings, Torres remains closed off to his unit. It feels like while he trusts them on the job, he is still having a hard time opening up to them about his personal life. His boundaries and walls remain as tight as they were when he first joined the team.

However, he quickly opens up to the woman he met working the case. Maybe because she shows no judgment or maybe because she is completely disconnected from his job, Torres tells her everything he has been feeling toward his religion and his life. He goes as far as talking about how he messed with his wound to feel something.

It will be interesting to see if this character returns and if the show continues to explore Torres’s feelings. Continuity is very important for storylines like this one.
