Will Trent Season 3 Episode 18 Review: Listening to a Heartbeat
The finale leaves a few people’s lives on the line, while Angie makes a big decision about her future. Will Trent Season 3 Episode 18, “ Listening to a Heartbeat,” opens the door for many possibilities in Season 4. The main one being that Ormewood, Amanda, and Nico all have a chance of not making it to the next premiere episode.
Each character ended Season 3 in a bad state. However, Nico seems to be on the path of recovery, while things look grim for Amanda and Ormewood. Viewers would be shocked if Amanda and Ormewood both don’t survive to Season 4.
However, it does look like one of them might not make it. Will Trent has been toying with the possibility of killing Ormewood all season. First, he gets a brain tumor, then he finds himself in a very deadly situation with a toxic illness that kills rapidly. Then, during “Listening to a Heartbeat,” a gunman almost shoots him.

This is a hilarious scene that further proves why Ormewood’s silliness is a breath of fresh air to an often serious show. Will Trent has made us worry about Ormewood all season, but then gives us a false sense of security. This makes his fall-out at the end a brilliant use of misdirection.
Ormewood adds so much to the series, but his death may be expected in Season 4.
The series has gone three seasons without losing anyone in the core cast. Most dedicated TV watchers know that many drama series eventually lose a character that fans will mourn. Ormewood may be that character for this series.
Will Trent added Gina Rodriguez as a series regular, but she vanishes and is barely used. However, we do not know her status going forward.
She could return in Season 4 as part of the regular cast. Additionally, Scott Foley and Yul Vazquez stepped into important roles, so they will likely return next season in some capacity.

This may mean that show needs to lose some characters to make room for them. Ormewood is a great character but not the most necessary for Will and his life. This may make him the cleanest kill for the show — but we hope that’s not the case.
The second big development involves Angie and her child.
Angie is finally moving forward in her life and is happy about it. The most interesting part of it is what it means for Will and Angie.
The show has kept the door open for them throughout these last seasons, but “Listening to a Heartbeat” feels like an official chapter close for them. Even if Seth and Angie don’t end up together, Will and her feel done.
She calls him family, and they discuss how this was their dream once (having a child). It seems like Angie is finally in a place to move on from him. This may lead him to doing the same.

Minor spoiler for non-book readers, Angie isn’t Will’s main love interest in them. The team behind the series has teased the possibility of adding that character to the series. This may have just been talk, or the first step towards writing that love story.
Either way, even if Angie and Will reunite romantically eventually, “Listening to a Heartbeat,” does an adequate job of convincing you that the door is officially closed.
The interpersonal stuff is what makes this a solid episiode but all the domestic terrorism stuff doesn’t land like it should. It’s a lot of chaos with not much pay off.
The storyline almost feels unnecessary just to get to the key parts: Nico and Amanda’s lives are in danger. It’s not the best conclusion to a solid season, but it leaves a lasting impression as we wait for what’s next.

Stray Thoughts
- The “Never Ever Getting Back Together” scene is great, and more signs that it might be over between Will and Angie.
- I really do hope Seth and Angie get a happy ending, but it’s way too soon for the show to make a definitive decision like that.
- If Ormewood doesn’t die, I am sticking to my theory that Faith and he become a future couple.
- I don’t know why Will makes such bold assumptions about his father and mother’s relationship.
- Ormewood and Will’s bromance has really shone this season.
- I am surprised there was no death this year, just cliffhangers about them. Expected at least one confirmation.
