Doctor Odyssey, Reviews

Sometimes the best way to approach uncertainty is with a definitive conclusion. This is the case with Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 18, “The Wave, Part 2.” This ABC freshman series goes out with a happy ending for all, because this may officially be the end.

The show has been left to float along with no decision yet reported on its future. Some series approach a lack of renewal with hope and take the cliffhanger road. This time, Ryan Murphy and his team decide to offer fans a satisfying conclusion.

Max and Avery end up together, Captain Robert gets his job back, Avery continues her plans for medical school, and Tristan hasn’t grown bitter about love and life. This ending leaves nothing unresolved, and everyone is fairly happy.

However, just because the series hasn’t chosen the road most traveled with loose ends, it doesn’t mean it hasn’t left room for the series to go in many directions for a potential Season 2.

Avery and Max decide to be together, but acknowledge that the distance will make things very hard, but they’re willing to try. If Doctor Odyssey lives on for a Season 2, we expect their relationship and distance woes to continue to cause tension. Additionally, the series is too new for them not to break up about 4,000 more times.

Joshua Jackson and Phillipa Soo create a lot of cute moments and charm with their pairing on “The Wave, Part 2.” The chemistry between Soo and Jackson has never been the problem. It’s just that their story feels so lackluster and standard.

The Season 1 finale doesn’t resolve this issue. However, it may make some viewers a bit more open to them as a couple. You may not fully believe the “I love yous,” but you’ll see some of their cuteness as a pair.

Avery and Max fans have many exciting relationship storylines ahead in Season 2. However, everyone else becomes an open book. This means Tristan, Robert, Munroe, and others are free to have brand new chapters in Season 2.

Similar to Doctor Odyssey Season 1, Episode 17, “The Wave,” the stories surrounding the episode aren’t the most exciting. However, the baby twist with the Karen character is a fun surprise. A very I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant approach to the end.

It helps give this seemingly despicable character some depth. This shows that even some of the worst people can have hearts.

This character is also very funny, and Annie Mumolo and Sean Teale have great comedic chemistry. Their scenes throughout this two-part finale have been the best. Doctor Odyssey really is better with comedy than drama.

“The Wave, Part 2,” is an all right conclusion to the season or series. It’s respectable that the show decides to end things so neatly, but nothing about the end makes us excited for the possible next chapter.

Overall, Doctor Odyssey Season 1 has been very rocky, but it has shown some potential. If ABC ends up renewing it, we are curious to see where it sails next.

Stray Thoughts
  • Peanut’s appearance makes me think of Betty from Will Trent.
  • Avery’s speech about feeling conflicted when in a relationship because she puts herself second is one of the best ways I think a series has described someone choosing themselves over love.
  • The couple divorcing is a bit of a sad ending. They could have kept that in the drafts, not necessary.
  • Jonathan Bennett really adds a lot of heart to this episode. This may be some of his best acting.
  • The drill immediately makes me uncomfortable, especially because we see no sterilization of it.
